The distribution of cotton producing areas and their output

China: It is the largest cotton producer in the world, with an annual output of approximately 6.841593 million metric tons. Among the 34 provinces in China, 24 of them grow cotton. The main producing areas include the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Yangtze River Basin (including Jiangsu Province and Hubei Province), and the Huanghuai Region (mainly in Hebei Province, Henan Province, Shandong Province, etc.). Among them, in 2022, the cotton output in Xinjiang was 5.391 million tons, accounting for 21% of the global total.

India: The second largest cotton producer in the world, producing approximately 5.323467 million metric tons of cotton annually, accounting for 27% of the world’s cotton output. Cotton cultivation is widespread across various states in India. The states of Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, and Rajasthan are important cotton-growing regions, accounting for more than 70% of India’s total cotton output.

The United States: The third largest cotton producer in the world and the largest cotton exporter globally. The main cotton-producing areas in the United States are mainly distributed in a large area from west to east in the southern part of the country. It is mainly composed of four cotton-growing regions, including the Western Region, the Southwestern Region, the South Central Region, and the Southeastern Region. The average annual cotton output in the United States over the past five years is approximately 3.8 million tons, accounting for about 15% of the global cotton output.

Pakistan: It produces approximately 2.216932 million metric tons of cotton annually, and cotton is also an indispensable part of Pakistan’s economic development. The provinces of Punjab and Sindh are the main production areas, and their cotton output accounts for about 9% of the world’s cotton output.

Brazil: The fourth largest cotton producer in the world, producing approximately 1.639537 million metric tons of cotton annually, accounting for about 6% of the world’s cotton output. Cotton cultivation in Brazil is mainly concentrated in the states of Mato Grosso and Bahia. These two states account for 90% of the country’s planting area and output.
